Cape of Good Hope

Cape of Good Hope
Cape Of Good Hope
Looking down on the coast
On Sunday, the University of Cape Town took us on a tour of the entire Cape peninsula. We visited downtown Cape Town, a beach/preservation area that had lots of wild penguins, the coastal area, Ocean View (a colored township outside of Cape Town where many people were forcibly moved to during the apartheid), and the Cape of Good Hope. The Cape of Good Hope is not the southernmost tip of Africa, as some believe, but it is a very beautiful lookout spot. Its at the very end of the Cape peninsula, and as you can see from the above pictures, no matter which direction you turn, the views are stunning.

All the international students who are enrolled at UCT went on the trip, so there were about 500 people wherever we stopped. I definitely want to go back to all of the places on the tour without such a large group, but it was awesome meeting people from all around the world.
The drive home
I took the opportunity to talk to some German and Norwegian girls, all older than me because they start their studies later. One took a year off and traveled around Australia and New Zealand after graduating high school, paying for it by waitressing and working on farms as she went. Another did an internship at a huge architecture firm in London, and helped design an airport in Kuwait. The majority of the international students were from the U.S., but its been cool talking to people from all around the world. UCT has an enrollment of about 26,000, and a fourth of that are international students, so I’ve got a lot of company!
